Super Bowl Post Mortem

By steveo + February 8th, 2010

Last Wednesday, I dispatched the following queries re: the forthcoming Super Bowl spots…

  • Were any of the spots unveiled during the Big Game memorable?
  • Were any the kind we will be talking about for years to come, either in a positive or negative light?
  • Did you remember the spot or product or both?

I honestly don’t know where to start. Oh wait, yes I do…

Without question this was, in my severely-over-caffeinated opinion, the worst collective group of Super Bowl TV commercials I have ever seen.  Seriously, what in the name of Joe Willie Namath were a lot of these people thinking?

The cost to air a spot during this year’s Super Bowl – which by the way was highly competitive (READ: Lots & lots of viewers) was around $3 million, give or take a few hundred thousand… throw in the cost to create and produce the spot and you better make sure you leave the viewer with a spot that is memorable… in a good way.

The shorter list is most-assuredly comprised of those who created, produced and aired a spot that clearly was effective, very well-done, and left you remembering both the spot as well as the product and yes, more than likely made you laugh…

My top 3 faves…

  • Snickers – Betty White & Abe Vigoda. ‘Nuff said…
  • Google – What’s not to love about Parisian Love?
  • Doritos – House Rules. I liked Underdog, too… but as for the Snack Attack Samurai, um, no…

As for pretty much all others… (save for a few like the VW Punch Dub, the Hyundai spot featuring Brett Favre & Light House) they left me scratching my head, literally.

This was perhaps the biggest head scratcher of them all…

Really? A beaver? Is the world ending or is it just me?

Finally… some random Super Bowl Post Mortem thoughts…

    • Go Daddy, we get it already. Hot girls. Danica Patrick… blah, blah, blah
    • What happened to the guy who used to be the eTrade baby? I miss him, spots aren’t the same
    • The Who. The best thing I can say is the laser show was fantastic…
    • The Cars dot com spot… yikes. If it were just a tad bit longer… by the time it was over did anyone care what happened to Timothy Richman? Me neither…
    • The Tim Tebow Experiment. Seriously, if I had not heard pre-game hype on this spot, I would have glossed right over which come to think of it is exactly what happened…

I thought a couple of the budweiser ads were clever ( the human bridge)?

      Hi Beth,

Thanks for responding… We will agree to disagree as I didn’t particularly care for that one. But I may be in the minority as a lot of people liked it! Thanks again and have a great day! Steve O
