Tweet at your own risk…

By steveo + April 28th, 2010

Twitter is of course a Social Media phenomenon. The number of users grows literally by the second. As for who’s tweeting, here’s a look at the demographics as of April 2010.

Now, I don’t know about you but I am somewhat disconcerted by the fact that 4% of kids ages 3-13 are Tweeting but be that as it may…

On any given day Twitter users are now now sending 50 million tweets which translates to an average of 600 tweets per second.

That’s a lot of Tweeting… with numbers so large, there are bound to be some that have the sender reaching for the oops button.

Like these unfortunate souls.

James Andrews, (AKA keyinfluencer) a VP from from Ketchum – A National PR firm based out of New York.  Last year Mr. Andrews tweeted the following as he made his way to a meeting with a client… a big one based in Memphis, the city he references.

The client as it turned out, was FedEx who is based out of… Memphis, TN. Also turns out that the folks at FedEx got wind of this Tweet and needless to say they were none too happy.

Mike Bacsik Jr., a former major-league pitcher. Mike, a Dallas talk show host and producer, decided to send a congratulatory Tweet to all the good folks of San Antonio for their victory over their rival, the Dallas Mavericks.

“Congrats to all the dirty Mexicans in San Antonio”

Mike is now a FORMER Dallas talk show host and producer.

Twitter user known as “theconner”…this Tweeter, a woman, had just landed a job at Cisco. She was, however unsure if she should in fact accept the position, tweeting:

“Cisco just offered me a job! Now I have to weigh the utility of a fatty paycheck against the daily commute to San Jose and hating the work.”

Yeah, not a good idea. Someone at Cisco saw it and Tweeted back…

“Who is the hiring manager? I’m sure they would love to know you will hate the work. We here at Cisco are versed in the web.”

Moral of the story kids?

Before hitting that Enter/Send button… think.

A simple 5-letter word? Yes, for sure.

But just think… stop and think. “Do I really want to send this?”
